Loft Bed Plans

Loft Bed PlansMuch like a number of other woodworking projects out there, often times locating quality loft bed plans online can be quite challenging.

If you’ve found this to be the case, then in the next few minutes I promise to share with you the best place I’ve found to get hold of loft bed plans, together with some useful tips for building your loft bed that will definitely help you save a lot of precious time.

Where to Get Quality Loft Bed Plans

I can imagine much like when I first began woodworking, you’re probably looking to find a decent set of good quality loft bed plans that you can download and put to use straight away.

This too is exactly what I was after at first. I began searching all over the web for these usable plans.

Quite frankly however, I was rather disappointed with the plans that I initially came across. Many of them just seemed to lack the critical measurements, they was no step by step instructions on how to use them, and most were only in 2D.

While, it took a bit of time… I finally found a solution.

Loft Bed Plans that Made Complete Sense

It took a great deal of time searching online, and downloading “free plans” (that were rather pointless) to locate the source of quality plans for building loft beds that I’m about to share with you.

According to my research, both these websites below seemed to be the most downloaded woodworking plans on the net.

  • Teds Woodworking (the #1 seller of woodworking plans in 2011)
  • Woodworking 4 Home

However…. both of these sites not only provide loft bed plans, besides having a number of quality loft bed plans, they also contain several thousands of plans on other projects. Such as… entertainment centers, kitchen cabinets, bunk beds and a lot more.

3 Handy Tips When Building a Loft Bed

Whether you have decided to take on the building of a loft bed as a fun project for you and your kids to engage in, or maybe you need a practical way to save some space, here are some important things to take into consideration when putting together your project.

1. Safety First

The first thing you need to keep in mind when attempting to build a loft bed is to avoid using lumber that is chemically treated. You should also avoid using nails to put the bed together.

The safety of the individual who will be using the bed should be of top priority. This is of double importance when it comes to children. Also, be sure to follow the federal guidelines which stipulate that the upper bunk be used for children six years or older.

2. Ensure the Measurements are Correct

As is the case with any form of woodwork project, it is important to get the measurements right. Failure to to get it right may leave you with several individual bits of wood that simply won’t fit together.

There is also the issue of the size of the bed versus that of the space where it is meant to be fitted. Your measurement should include the area the bed will be placed and the height above and below the bed.

Give the ample room at the top for the individual who will be using the bed to get on and off without hurting their head, and ample room for walking around underneath it. And, ensuring that the mattress is recessed within the platform frame will help to create more headroom at the top.

3. Ensure the Ladder is Evenly Spaced

The ladder is a key part of the project. Therefore, use hard thick wood to build the rungs and ensure they are evenly spaced. Measure the height of the ladder after the loft is complete and in place.

This will allow for the use of the correct number of rungs and the matching up of the two upright pieces of lumber to the bottom of the bed. The ladder can also act as some sort of support for the bed, but that will of course depend on how you built it.

The space at the bottom of the bed can be used to hold a dresser, desk, futon couch for sleepovers or anything else your imagination can drum up.
